Equipping Worship in the Jungle

Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, sing and make music from your heart to the Lord. – Ephesians 5:19

Music is central to worship throughout Scripture. Songs of praise unite believers, strengthen faith, and proclaim God’s goodness across generations and cultures. Even in remote places, music in worship remains a powerful way to glorify the Lord and encourage His people.

Our partnership with Instruments of Joy is helping support and strengthen worship in the Amazon by providing guitars to jungle pastors. For the past 13 years, this partnership has immeasurably blessed many of our pastors. Through these donations, we are able to equip pastors and missionaries across the Amazon region of Brazil with guitars for their ministry in some of the most remote parts of the jungle.

Instruments of Joy is a local, Nashville-based nonprofit that collects gently used instruments, repairs them, and distributes them to communities in need worldwide. They work deliberately to match donated instruments with recipients through trusted partners. Once the instruments are delivered, they send photos back to donors, creating a meaningful connection between donors and recipients.

Each year, our Justice & Mercy Amazon team, along with teams of pastors and counselors from the United States, hosts three conferences for indigenous jungle pastors. These three weeks of the year (one in February, one in April/May, and one in July) offer a special opportunity for pastors to travel to our John Paculabo Conference Center outside Manaus to receive encouragement, training, counseling, and rest. For many who attend, it feels like a rare retreat, as they seldom step away from their community and church.

These conferences are central to our work and help establish meaningful relationships with indigenous pastors. Through these relationships, mission teams visit villages, offering camp programs, medical care, and evangelism. The conferences are a foundational step in equipping pastors and strengthening faith within their communities.

Thanks to these donated instruments, we can send 3–4 guitars with each U.S. team to our conferences. For pastors who travel for days by boat or canoe to attend, these instruments often return with them to villages where music resources are scarce.

Music serves as a vital ministry tool, sometimes more effective than words. By providing guitars, we help pastors and missionaries lead worship and share their faith. In villages scattered throughout the Amazon, they are lifting their voices, leading their communities in song, and proclaiming the Gospel. Through these simple instruments, worship rises from remote places, bringing encouragement, unity, and hope to the Church.
