Renewed Refugee Support in Moldova

When war first broke out in Ukraine, Moldova opened its borders—and its heart—to families fleeing for their lives. Mothers carrying infants. Grandparents who had never left their hometowns. Children with their only belongings in a small backpack. Hundreds of thousands poured in, hoping to find safety in a country already struggling with poverty.

That was two years ago. But the crisis hasn’t ended. About 100 refugees per day are still crossing the border. While many organizations have moved on, JMI is still here—standing in the gap for those with nowhere else to turn.

This year, we’re strengthening our efforts through a two-pronged approach to care for these families:

  1. Supporting refugee families directly. Every month, we provide approximately 67 refugee families with gift cards so they can buy exactly what they need—whether that’s food, medicine, warm clothing, or diapers for their babies. This small act gives them the dignity of choice in a time when so much has been taken from them.
  2. Equipping five local churches to care for hundreds of refugees. These churches have become lifelines for 500-700 refugees every month—offering food, shelter, and emotional and spiritual support. At one of these churches, where families are living under one roof, JMI provides all the food they need to survive.

Many of the refugees we serve are trained professionals and business owners who worked hard to build good lives for their families. Now, they’ve lost everything. They’ve left behind homes, careers, and communities, forced to start over in a foreign country.

And yet, in the midst of so much loss, hope finds a way. Through the love and care of our partner churches, many refugees are encountering Christ—some for the very first time. They are discovering that, even when everything is stripped away, they are not alone.

At the start of this crisis, we responded quickly because of your generosity. But now, our designated crisis funds are nearly gone. To keep this ministry strong, we rely on our general fund to meet the needs. With your help, we will keep showing up. We will keep providing food, shelter, and hope. We will keep standing in the gap for these families—because they shouldn’t have to face this alone.

God is providing—through His church, through His people, through you. As we meet each family, we are reminded that true hope isn’t found in what we own but in Christ alone. Thank you for being part of this work.
