Stela’s Story

“Choose a job you like and you will not have to work a day in your life.” I really like this quote and it truly describes the fact that my work brings me pleasure. I can’t say that I don’t encounter difficulties or misunderstandings, because I do, but I know these things develop my character and prepare me for the future.

There are, however, a few things I can share. First of all, I really like the team I work alongside. Each of them are extraordinary people, and most importantly, have a big heart for God. Secondly, the children we work with are so valuable. Each year I have another opportunity to meet them and see how beautiful God works in their lives. I like to see them transform from embarrassed, shy, or inhibited kids, to become independent, calculated, serious, intelligent young men and women, who know how to make decisions and are willing to take risks for their future.  Sometimes I look at them and imagine their lives in 3 or 4 years, and it is so beautiful.

Some see the work of a social worker as small or of little importance, but, behind the curtains of our homes, life-transforming work happens as we talk, encourage, discipline, celebrate and mourn with each student. At some point, they become your friends because you have managed to reach their hearts and they, in turn, see in you a person of confidence and one they can trust. These things don’t happen overnight, but every day, little by little, we begin to see changes.

We spend much of our lives working, and the only way you can be truly satisfied is to do what you truly like to do. Each of these students are the most important part of my life at the moment, and I’m so thankful they are. I see myself in them, and I know how they live and what they think because, at one time, I was one of them. This is why I work with them so that at the right moment I can encourage them and help them to make the right decisions.

Working with them is an amazing job!
