Teen Spotlight: Alina

In this Q&A, Alina shares highlights of her experience in JMI’s Transitional Living Program. Currently in her second year of the program, she has shown herself to be incredibly responsible and hardworking. Her native language is Russian, but there were only Romanian-speaking groups for her to study in. So, she decided to enter college and study all her subjects in Romanian. Initially, it was a challenge, but she is doing great at college now. Alina is delighted to have the chance to pursue her dreams and thrive academically.

What motivated you to join this program?
Since childhood, I have been sponsored by the vulnerable child program, and when I was given the opportunity to join the TL Program, I gladly accepted, as I didn’t have the financial means to pay for my studies.

In what ways do you feel like you’ve grown spiritually over the last few years in the program?
I attend a church in Chisinau. I understand the message of what we discuss during devotion, and if questions arise, I am able to identify the answers.

Can you tell us about the opportunity to continue your education and pursue the career you’re interested in?
The opportunity provided by the sponsor and the program allows me to continue my studies in the field of finance and banking.

Have you grown socially through the program?
In the environment (of Grace House), I overcame my fear of public speaking and made new acquaintances.

What volunteer experiences have you participated in, and what have they meant to you?
This year, I went to camp. I really enjoyed this experience because I love doing good and helping children.

Has your participation in the Transitional Living program impacted your family?
My parents are grateful for this opportunity for me.

How has living in Grace House been different from your life at home in the village where you were raised?
When I lived with my grandmother, I felt like a child and didn’t think much about what might happen tomorrow. But when I moved to live at Grace House, I started an independent and responsible life.

What essential life skills have you learned during the program?
During the program, I learned how to manage money and time.

What is your favorite memory so far from life in the house?
The most beautiful memory was when I first met the girls, and I was welcomed as part of a family.
