Politically and economically unstable, Ecuador is a predominantly agrarian society….a rich blend of mostly Spanish-Indian ethnicities. With a geography that includes volcanoes scattered among mountain ranges and tropical jungles, there are remote villages that are home to people living essentially as they have for centuries. Sectarian discrimination is a societal factor for many who have experienced religious persecution. Additionally, some children are required by their families to work rather than attend school in order to achieve a minimal subsistence.
With a mission to offer educational alternatives to working children and support those who have been religiously persecuted and economically deprived, JMI conducts annual volunteer trips to Ecuador, usually in the month of October or November. A plan to offer training in more productive farming methods and/or animal husbandry is now under consideration as this new mission opportunity evolves.
